Client: The Macallan
Project: “Sotheby’s Auction: The Macallan 64 Year Old in Lalique: Cire Perdue”
Services: Webcasting, video production
Special features: Multiple cameras
The Macallan teamed up with Lalique for an auction in which 100% of the proceeds went to charity: water. The webcast expanded the bidding audience, allowing remote bidders to get a feel for the beauty of the decanter and the excitement of the event.
For the two-camera shoot, we used an EX1 and an EX3, which had a lens package that enabled very detailed shots from across the room. We shot short interviews with key event attendees, and also put wireless mics on the auctioneer and a Macallan executive, who provided a running commentary. (We did not provide the house mic used.) Our video was also used to power flat-screen TVs located around the event space.
The event was a huge success, with approximately $460,000 raised for charity while breaking a record for most expensive whiskey and crystal decanter ever sold. We’ve webcast several auctions in addition to this one, and bringing both the interactivity of the events and personality of the auctioneers to a wider audience has proven to be a big draw for audiences.
